SUSAN RICHARDS

HTSusanPeterSidneyandGwenn

Susan has worked as an educator with families and children as a child care center director, a preschool teacher, a children’s librarian, a child care referral specialist and now on Nantucket as a family education and outreach specialist at the Community School.

While her professional focus has been with the human side of families, on a personal level she has a deep love for animals of all shapes and sizes, and she currently lives with four rescue animals—two dogs and two cats. This love has also led her to a vegetarian (and now vegan) lifestyle, which she has been practicing for almost 40 years.

As a Board Member and active direct volunteer at the shelter,  Susan combines her educational expertise with her love of animals to help coordinate NSHA’s Humane Education Program—visiting classrooms, camps, farmers markets/special events, and child care programs to help educate children (and adults) of all ages about kindness and compassion for animals. Susan is also our Volunteer Coordinator.

Along with the animal members of her family, Susan shares her home with her husband of over thirty years, Peter (also a NSHA volunteer) and her son Parker (who is now off at college but occasionally comes home—mostly to see the animals of the house!)
