It takes a small village to run an animal shelter, so volunteers are a must at NiSHA! In fact, the first 2 years of its existence, NiSHA was completely run by volunteers. From creating policies and protocols, to raising money and running community events, to scooping litter boxes and walking dogs, volunteers help keep NiSHA going every single day. We love having volunteers of all ages, with all interests, with all kinds of schedules.
If you would like to help out, fill out the application below. We will then contact you about training and scheduling.

Direct Animal Care
Animal Caregivers: This is the job for those who really want to care for and interact with our resident animals. Arrive at 7am or 6 PM for feeding, cleaning cages and litter boxes, walking dogs and socializing animals. Duration depends on how many animals are in the shelter.
Dog Training & Enrichment: Help our dogs find loving homes by having perfect manners! Or give them a break from their kennels by engaging their minds and exercising their bodies.
Foster: If you love animals, but can’t for any reason commit to a pet of your own then consider fostering! More information on the Foster page.
Kitty Care: Do you have that special touch? Some of our cats are a little nervous and need gentle volunteers to coax them out of their shells. Other cats have tons of energy and need playtime!
We hold several special events each year. All events are work-intensive and volunteers are always needed. From working at the event to helping create, organize and publicize the event in the weeks and months leading up to it, there is always plenty to do!
