Long-time summer resident Jane Carlin has been an active Nantucket community member for many years. She has volunteered for the Boston Pops and was a member of the board of directors of A Safe Place (recently stepping down as president), forging tight friendships with year-round as well as summer citizens in the process. In addition, Jane has taught for years in the literacy program as an ESL teacher, first at the middle school, and now at the Atheneum. One of the important draws to the island has been its dog-friendly aspect. Since Jane never travels without her dog(s), it is important that they feel welcomed.
Off island, Jane has been a teacher and coach, first for the Greenwich Public Schools, and later at Sacred Heart University and now at Southern Connecticut State University and Marymount Manhattan College at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, teaching a wide range of subjects, mainly in the field of Communications. She is equally committed to service the community in Stamford, where she and her husband Ben Gifford (and current dog Casper) have lived for years, serving on several boards: Domestic Violence Crisis Center, Inspirica Homeless Shelter, English Learner Support Services, the Bartlett Arboretum, and she is an active participant in an English Setter rescue program. She participates in activities associated women’s rights and with the state Democratic party as well.
An avid runner and power lifter, Jane enjoys a very full life. At this particular time, she is most eager to join the NiSHA family!
